Etymology

Υγρό is the neuter form of the ancient adjective ὑγρός, meaning wet, moist, or fluid. Modern speakers use it both as an adjective, for a humid day or a damp cloth, and as a stand-alone noun for liquids, as on bottles of dishwashing liquid or brake fluid. The linguist Robert Beekes classifies ὑγρός as a word of Pre-Greek origin, so no secure Proto-Indo-European root has been established. Because of that uncertainty, no reliable cognates outside Greek can be given.
