Etymology

Μηχανικός is built from μηχανή, an ancient Greek word for a device, contrivance, or means of achieving something, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning "pertaining to." Μηχανή itself goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root tied to ability and power. That same root produced English "may" and "might," and through Latin machina it also gave English "machine." So μηχανικός and "mechanical" share a long, winding family history that passes through Latin on its way into English.
