εκατοντάδα builds on εκατόν, the ancient Greek word for hundred, using its combining stem εκατοντ- that also shows up in words like εκατονταετία (a hundred-year span) and εκατόνταρχος (centurion). The suffix -άδα forms a collective noun, the same pattern seen in δεκάδα (a group of ten) and χιλιάδα (a group of a thousand). εκατόν itself goes back to the old Indo-European word for hundred.
