Πτυχίο comes from πτυχή, meaning fold or crease, itself tied to the verb πτύσσω, to fold. Documents in earlier periods were folded into leaves or booklets, and this folded form became linked to formal certificates. Over time the word narrowed to mean the folded certificate that proves a course of study, and today it simply means a degree or diploma.
