Etymology

The word goes back to Ancient Greek ἀνήρ, ἀνδρός (anḗr, andrós), meaning man. The stem ανδρ- softened to αντρ- in everyday speech, a common shift in Greek where nd simplifies to nt. The form αντρά, with stress on the last syllable, reflects a dialectal and song-register habit of shifting the stress, heard especially in Cretan and other folk speech.
