Etymology
στου is not an independent word but a fused (univerbated) form of the preposition σε ("in, at, to") plus the masculine/neuter genitive singular definite article του. The preposition σε descends from ancient εἰς through the medieval contraction ἐς/σε; του continues the ancient genitive τοῦ of the article ὁ. The merger produces a possessive-locative meaning "at/to the (place of)," as in στου γιατρού = "at the doctor's."
