εκπομπή derives from the verb εκπέμπω 'to send out, emit, broadcast', built from the prefix εκ- 'out' and the ancient verb πέμπω 'to send'. The noun originally denoted 'a sending out, emission' and took on the modern sense of 'broadcast' with the rise of radio and television. The related noun πομπή ('a sending, procession') passed through Latin pompa into English as 'pomp'.
