Etymology
The adverb is the petrified neuter singular of the demonstrative quantifier τόσος ('so much, so great'). This descends from Ancient Greek τόσος (also τόσσος), built on the inherited demonstrative pronominal stem that also gives the definite article. From the sense 'this/that much' it generalized into the degree adverb 'so, to such an extent'.
