Etymology
From Ancient Greek γίγνομαι (gígnomai) 'to come into being, be born, become', which lost its reduplication in later Greek to give γίνομαι. It derives from the Proto-Indo-European root *ǵenh₁- 'to beget, give birth, produce', the same root behind a vast family of 'birth/origin' words across Indo-European languages.
