Etymology
The adverb μόνο is the neuter singular of the adjective μόνος ('alone, sole, only'), used adverbially. Ancient Greek μόνος (Ionic μοῦνος) goes back to an earlier form μόνϝος (mónwos). Its deeper origin is uncertain and is sometimes regarded as Pre-Greek, so no secure Proto-Indo-European reconstruction can be given.
