Etymology
From Ancient Greek ὑπάρχω, a compound of the preposition ὑπό ('under, from beneath') and ἄρχω ('to begin, to be first, to rule'). The original sense was 'to make a beginning, to be there from the start, to be at hand,' which gradually narrowed to 'to be in existence, to exist.' The Greek-internal root ἄρχω has no securely reconstructed Indo-European etymology, so only the prefix can be confidently traced.
