Etymology
The word comes from the verb υπάρχω, meaning to exist or to be present. That verb combines the prefix υπό (under) with the ancient verb άρχω (to begin, to rule). The original sense was close to to begin under or to be at the start, which shifted over time to mean simply to be or to exist. The noun ύπαρξη was formed from this verb with the abstract noun suffix -ξη.
