Etymology

Modern Greek τώρα descends from the Medieval/Byzantine phrase τὴν ὥραν 'the hour, at this hour', which contracted into a single adverb meaning 'now'. The element ὥρα 'hour, season, period of time' is the same word that, borrowed through Latin hōra, gave English 'hour'. So τώρα literally encodes the idea of 'at this (very) hour'.
