From Ancient Greek ἐκεῖ ("there"), the locative adverb paired with the demonstrative ἐκεῖνος ("that one"). It is formed from a deictic prefix ἐ- plus the pronominal element κεῖ, ultimately reflecting the Proto-Indo-European deictic particle *ḱe-/*ḱo- ("this, here"). The word has remained stable in form and meaning from antiquity into Modern Greek.
