Etymology

The word comes from the verb κυβερνώ, meaning to steer a ship or to govern, plus the adjective suffix -ητικός. The same root gave Latin gubernare and, through it, English words like govern and governor. In the twentieth century, Norbert Wiener also drew on this root to coin the term cybernetics.
