Etymology
The word comes from ἀποικία in Ancient Greek, a noun built on ἄποικος, meaning someone who lives away from home. That in turn joins the prefix ἀπό, meaning away from, with οἶκος, meaning house or dwelling. So a colony was literally a group settled away from the home community.
