Etymology

The word comes from Ancient Greek ἀσπίς (aspís), genitive ἀσπίδος, which named the large round shield carried by hoplites. Linguists cannot trace it to a secure Indo-European root, and many treat it as a loanword from a pre-Greek substrate language spoken in the Aegean before Greek arrived. The form has stayed remarkably stable from Homer to today.
