Etymology

Πουλάω is the modern, spoken descendant of the ancient verb πωλέω, meaning to sell or offer for sale. Over centuries the ancient contracted ending -έω shifted in everyday speech to -άω, giving the modern form. The formal written variant πωλώ survives today mainly in signs and legal or commercial language, such as ΠΩΛΕΙΤΑΙ, meaning for sale.
