Etymology
Ακτινοβολία is a Modern Greek formation built from ακτίνα (ray) and the verbal root βολ-, tied to βάλλω (to throw, to cast). Taken together the word means something like "the casting of rays", and it now covers both physical radiation and the figurative glow of a person or object. The ultimate origin of ακτίνα and βάλλω is not securely traced to Proto-Indo-European; several etymologists treat both as possibly pre-Greek in origin, so no confident root reconstruction exists.
