Etymology
Νότος comes from Ancient Greek, where it named both the south wind and, by extension, the direction south. Its deeper origin is uncertain; standard sources do not trace it to a secure Indo-European root, and some scholars suspect it comes from a pre-Greek substrate word. Ancient Greeks associated the south wind with moisture and rain, which likely explains why related words like νοτερός (damp) share its root. The wind was also personified as the god Notos, son of the dawn goddess Eos.
