Etymology
Formed from the noun κώδικας ('codex, code'), which Greek took from Latin codex ('book, ledger, body of laws'). Latin codex originally meant a 'tree-trunk' or 'block of wood' split into writing tablets (variant of caudex). The relational adjective κωδικός therefore means 'pertaining to a code'; in modern usage its masculine form has been nominalized into the everyday word for 'code, password'.
