Etymology

Modern Greek τόπος is inherited unchanged from Ancient Greek τόπος (tópos) 'place, region, position', already common in classical Greek. Its deeper Proto-Indo-European origin is uncertain and no secure cognates outside Greek have been established. Through learned borrowing the word supplied the international combining element seen in 'topic', 'topography', 'topology' and 'utopia'.
