Etymology
Inherited from Ancient Greek πέτρα ('rock, cliff, ledge'), which sits alongside the masculine πέτρος ('stone'). The deeper origin is uncertain and has no securely established Indo-European etymology; it may be a pre-Greek (substrate) word. Through Latin petra it became the source of 'petr-' words across European languages.
