Etymology

From Ancient Greek ἀγορά, originally the public assembly and the open space where citizens gathered, which in turn became the marketplace at the heart of the Greek city. It derives from the verb ἀγείρω ('to gather, bring together'), so the underlying notion is a 'place of gathering'. The word survives unbroken into Modern Greek with the central meaning 'market', extended in modern usage to abstract economic markets.
