Etymology
Borrowed in the early 20th century from French 'taxi', itself a clipping of 'taximètre' ('taximeter', the fare-measuring device). The French source fuses 'taxe' ('charge, fare') with the combining form '-mètre', which descends from Greek μέτρον ('measure') — so the word that re-entered Greek carries a partly Hellenic pedigree. In Modern Greek it is neuter and fully indeclinable, like most loanwords ending in a stressed vowel.
