Etymology

Περπάτημα is a noun built from the verb περπατώ, "to walk," with the suffix -μα that turns a verb into a noun naming the result or manner of the action. Περπατώ itself grew out of the ancient verb περιπατέω, "to walk about," a compound of περί ("around") and πατέω ("to tread"). The root πατέω has no settled origin further back; some scholars think it entered Greek from a pre-Greek substrate language rather than from Proto-Indo-European, so no PIE root can be stated with confidence.
