Etymology
Νοικιάζω comes from νοίκι, the everyday Greek word for rent money. Νοίκι itself is a worn-down form of the ancient word ενοίκιον, built from εν (in) plus οίκος (house), so the original sense was payment for living in a house. Greek speakers dropped the unstressed initial vowel over time, turning ενοίκιον into νοίκι, then added the verb suffix -άζω to form the action word νοικιάζω, to rent.
