Word family
Etymology
The verb comes from the ancient Greek κατατίθημι, a compound of the prefix κατά (down) and τίθημι (to put, to place). Modern Greek shortened the inner verb to θέτω in most compounds, so καταθέτω literally means to put down. The sense narrowed over time to cover formal acts of putting something on record: money in a bank, a document with an office, or words in sworn testimony.
