Etymology
Κουλουράκι is the diminutive of κουλούρα or κουλούρι, the Greek words for a ring-shaped bread. Greek speakers added the diminutive suffix -άκι to mark a smaller, sweeter version of that shape, and over time the word settled on the modern sense of a small butter cookie. The ring or coil shape often survives in the cookie itself, twisted or braided rather than round.
