The word combines the prefix ξε-, a worn-down form of the ancient preposition εκ meaning out of or beyond, with περνάω, meaning to pass. Together they mean to pass beyond something, hence to surpass or get past it. Περνάω itself traces back to the ancient adverb πέρα, beyond, further on. The underlying sense of motion past a point has stayed stable for over two thousand years.
