Etymology
From Ancient Greek βαθμός 'step, threshold, degree', a deverbal noun built on the root of βαίνω 'to step, go' with the result-noun suffix -θμός (compare σταθμός 'station'). The concrete sense of a 'step' one climbs developed into the abstract notions of 'degree, grade, rank, level'. The verbal root ultimately reflects PIE *gʷem- 'to go, come'.
