Etymology
From Ancient Greek αἴθουσα, originally the feminine present participle of the verb αἴθω ('to kindle, burn, blaze, shine'). It first denoted the sun-exposed, light-filled portico or veranda of a house — literally 'the shining/glowing one' — and over time generalized to any large room or hall. The sense of light and brightness links it to a family of Greek words about fire and the bright sky.
