Etymology
Modern Greek πηγή continues Ancient Greek πηγή (pēgḗ) 'running water, stream, source', with a Doric variant παγά. It is traditionally connected to the verb πήγνυμι 'to fix, make fast, congeal', but this link is contested and Beekes treats the noun as possibly of Pre-Greek origin. From the literal sense of a water source it developed the figurative meaning 'origin, source (of information, energy, etc.)' already in antiquity.
