Etymology
Πηγάδι comes from the medieval Greek diminutive πηγάδιον, built on the ancient noun πηγή, meaning spring or source. Over time the diminutive lost its small-scale meaning and simply became the everyday word for a dug well. The root of πηγή itself is not securely traced to a single Proto-Indo-European form, so no PIE root is given here.
