Etymology

Κοριτσία is the plural of κορίτσι, a diminutive of the ancient noun κόρη, meaning girl or maiden (the same word used as a title for Persephone, Kore). The diminutive suffix -ίτσι was added to κόρη, and modern Greek then formed the neuter plural κοριτσία from that diminutive. Scholars are not fully agreed on where κόρη itself comes from, and some argue it predates Indo-European Greek as a substrate word, so no secure root is given here.
