Etymology

Παλικάρι comes from the Byzantine Greek παλληκάριον, a diminutive of the older word πάλλαξ, meaning a youth or young man. The root of πάλλαξ is not securely traced, so no confirmed Proto-Indo-European ancestor exists for it. Over the centuries the word shifted from marking mere youth to praising courage, so a παλικάρι is now a young man admired for bravery, not just age.
