Etymology
The word joins the prefix προ- (before) to υπολογισμός (calculation), itself from the verb υπολογίζω, built from υπό (under) and λογίζομαι (to reckon, from λόγος, account or word). So the whole word reads literally as a calculation made in advance. Modern Greek adopted this compound in the 19th century for state and institutional finance, matching the sense of the French budget-era term devis or the English estimate.
