Etymology
Διαστημικός comes from διάστημα, meaning gap, interval, or space. Διάστημα itself derives from διίστημι, a verb built from the prefix διά- (through, apart) and ίστημι (to stand or set). Adding the adjectival suffix -ικός turns the noun into pertaining to space. The word entered common use in the twentieth century once Greek needed a term for outer space and space travel.
