Etymology
Modern Greek φύση descends from Ancient Greek φύσις ('origin, growth, nature'), a deverbal noun built on φύω ('to bring forth, grow, produce'). The original sense is 'the way a thing grows into being', which broadened to the essential constitution of things and the natural world as a whole. The English words 'physics' and 'physical' are learned borrowings from this same Greek stem.
