Etymology
From Ancient Greek ζώνη (zṓnē) 'girdle, belt', a derivative of the verb ζώννυμι (zṓnnumi) 'to gird, to belt'. The English word 'zone' is itself a learned borrowing of this Greek noun, which had already developed the sense of a 'band' or 'belt' of the earth. In Modern Greek it covers both the literal belt and the abstract 'zone' (geographical, climatic, time).
