Etymology
Modern Greek borrowed ρόλος from French rôle, which goes back to Old French rolle 'a roll, scroll', from Medieval Latin rotulus 'little wheel, roll of paper', a diminutive of Latin rota 'wheel'. The theatrical sense developed because an actor's lines were written on a rolled-up sheet of paper. The word was adapted into Greek as a second-declension masculine noun.
