Etymology
The verb comes from ancient Greek ἐξετάζω, built from the prefix ἐξ- ("out, thoroughly") and ἐτάζω ("to test, scrutinize"). Ἐτάζω is generally linked to ἐτεός, "true, real," so the underlying sense is to test something to find out whether it is true. That connects the word, at a distance, to the verb "to be."
