Etymology

The word is built from the privative prefix αν- (not) and εξαρτώμαι, a verb meaning to depend on or hang from something. The abstract noun suffix -σία turns that verb into a state: the condition of not hanging on anything else. εξαρτώμαι itself comes from εξ- (out of) plus the old verb αρτάω, to attach or fasten, part of a Greek word family built on the idea of fitting things together.
