Etymology
The word joins the negative prefix αν- ("not") with εξαρτώμαι, "to depend on," which literally means "to hang from" (εκ-, "out of," plus αρτάω, "to fasten or hang"). The suffix -τος turns this verb into an adjective, the way "-ed" or "-able" does in English. So the word builds the idea of independence out of a physical image: something not hanging from anything else.
