Δίδυμα is the neuter plural of the adjective δίδυμος, used on its own as a noun meaning twins. The word goes back to Ancient Greek δίδυμος, built by reduplicating the root for two. Ancient Greeks used it for anything paired, and it narrowed over time to mean twin siblings.
