Etymology
The word comes from Phoenician ʾālep, meaning ox, by way of Hebrew aleph. Greeks took the Semitic letter name to label the first sound and symbol of their own alphabet, turning the initial glottal stop into a vowel. It is a loanword, not a native Greek or Indo-European formation.
