Etymology

Έντεκα comes from Ancient Greek ἕνδεκα (héndeka), a compound of ἕν (hén, the neuter form of εἷς, 'one') and δέκα (déka, 'ten'). The word literally means 'one-ten', the same logic behind Latin undecim. Over time the nasal-plus-stop cluster νδ shifted in pronunciation and spelling to ντ, giving the modern form έντεκα.
