Etymology

Επένδυση comes from the verb επενδύω, built from the prefix επί- (upon, over) and ενδύω (to dress, to put on). Ενδύω itself is εν- (in) plus δύω (to enter, to sink into). The image is of clothing draped or wrapped over something. Greek extended this from literal covering, such as a lining or cladding, to the modern financial sense of putting money into something for a future return.
