Etymology

Greek borrowed καρτέλ directly from French cartel in the twentieth century, in its economic sense of firms agreeing to fix prices or output. French cartel came from Italian cartello, a placard or written challenge, itself a diminutive of carta, meaning paper. Carta traces to Latin charta, a sheet of papyrus, which Latin took from Greek χάρτης. So the word left Greek in ancient form, passed through Latin, Italian, and French, and returned centuries later with a new, specialized business meaning.
