Etymology
πρόνοια comes from the prefix προ- (before, ahead) attached to νόος/νοῦς (mind), by way of the verb προνοέω, to think ahead or foresee. The noun originally meant forethought or foresight, then took on the religious sense of divine providence in later Greek. Modern Greek also uses it in a secular, bureaucratic sense for state social welfare.
